Health and Safety

Our number one concern at Ramah Outdoor Adventure is for the safety of everyone at camp.

Outdoor wilderness activities have inherent risks that are different from normal day-to-day living. Ramah Outdoors works to minimize these risks through safety conscious staff, proper equipment management, and regular briefings and training.

Following principles established by the American Camp Association and National Ramah Commission, all Ramah Outdoor Adventure instructors undergo intense staff training that includes intimate knowledge of step-by-step emergency protocols, inclement weather guidelines, communication procedures, and how to avoid dangerous situations.  Most of our staff is Wilderness First Aid certified, at a minimum.

Upon arrival, all chalutzim receive a camp safety orientation that discusses rules for having a safe time at Ramah Outdoor Adventure, along with procedures to follow in case of a safety or security incident.

Additionally, we coordinate closely with the local emergency medical services and sheriff department to ensure that we are prepared for any possible medical, health, or safety contingencies.

We have trained medical personnel on site at all times that campers are present to care for sick or injured children and to dispense medication. The medical staff is overseen by our medical committee made up of physicians specializing in pediatrics, orthopaedics, allergy, asthma, and emergency medicine.  For more serious injuries or illnesses, we have evacuation procedures in place to ensure the fastest transfer possible to a fully equipped hospital.  The medical committee also provides ongoing guidance regarding accommodating food allergies and administering of medicines.  There is always at least one physician on call to support the on site medical providers.

Driving is one of the most dangerous activities associated with summer camps across the country, so at Ramah Outdoors we intentionally keep driving time to a minimum by concentrating our excursions in the national forests and national parks near our base camp plus we know that time spent on the trail is way better than time spent on the road.

Our directors conduct regular safety and security reviews and evaluation, and work closely with local officials to make sure our safety standards and practices are the best they can be. The health and welfare of our community will always be our top concern.
